Introducing Sugar Beat Sweets!

Please head over to my new blog at TheUrbanHousewife.com, where you'll find this post & more!

There's a reason I've been lagging in the posting department lately & I've been waiting until things were in full swing until I let you all in on my little secret. I own a vegan bakery! Yes, Sugar Beat Sweets is a wholesale & special order bakery in San Francisco specializing in vegan, organic, artisan cupcakes, cakes, & other confections!

I've been baking away in my commercial kitchen for quite some time & things have been great so far. My clients have run the gamut from local vegans with birthdays, to VegNews, PETA, the ACLU & Sephora corporate! I've also been donating cupcakes to local animal rights groups, such as Yes on Prop 2 & Rocket Dog Rescue. I supply cupcakes to grocery stores, co-ops, & cafes around San Francisco, with plans to expand within the city & to local areas!

Sugar Beat Sweets cupcakes are available in the following locations:
Rainbow Grocery
1745 Folsom @ 14th Street

Other Avenues
3930 Judah Street @ 44th Avenue

Real Food Co.

2140 Polk @ Broadway

Ike's Place
3506 16th St @ Sanchez

Mojo Bicycle Cafe
639-A Divisadero Street @ Hayes

Harvest Urban Market
191 8th St @ Howard

Deliveries are Tuesday & Friday afternoons, so get 'em while they're fresh!

Additionally, on October 4th & 5th, I will be selling sweet treats at the 9th Annual World Veg Festival Weekend & on November 30th I will be at Bazaar Bizaare. If you're around, please come say Hello & grab a cupcake!

I truly hope my blossoming business won't keep me away from the blog world. I'll keep posting, of course, but you may see more sweet treats than ever on these pages while my life revolves around baking. Try not to get a toothache, ok?

Find out more information about Sugar Beat Sweets on our webpage & be sure to add SBS on Myspace & Flickr! We're also on Yelp!

By the way, check out the "Batter Chatter" interview I did with the awesome Jessie Oleson at Cakespy.com, it's all about the progress of vegan baking, as well as Sugar Beat Sweets!

Congrats on your venture. Will you offer mail-order? It's nearly impossible to get vegan baked goods where I live.

Congratulations! How fabulous for you--hope it's a huge success! :)

MELISSER!!! THIS IS SO EXCITING!!! :0)

Oh my god, I'm so excited/ jealous! Can I work for you? If only you were closer to me! I applied to work at BabyCakes (NYC) and they rejected me, and there are no other vegan bakeries nearby... I guess I'll just have to wait until you expand and start putting bakeries all over the map. That shouldn't take too long, right? I just know you'll do some incredible business!

That's so awesome, I've been lamenting the lack of a vegan bakery in the bay area! Any plans to get a storefront in the future?

This is awesome - would you be willing to donate something for our bakesale? At work we have a 3 week long United Way Community Support campaign going -- we are having a bakesale on Tuesday 9/30 -- let me know offline if you need any details. I'm at Market/Fremont.

I'm planning to make lemon bars (vegan), a Cafe Gratitude coconut creme pie recipe (but in a baking dish or muffin tin so I can make it easier to dish out), and waffles (to be warmed in the toaster).

CONGRATS! Nothing better than lady-owned businesses!! And vegan to boot! I love it. If I could I would be all about ordering myself up some of your cuppies. Enjoy it and rock that show!

Melisser, I am having a SBS cupcake for breakfast! You know me so you know this is not a joke. Delicious!

That is so rad! Major congrats on your venture.

Jess said...

Congratulations, Melisser! This is so exciting! I miss your cupcakes... I know you hear this all the time, but they're seriously fucking mind-blowingly amazing. You should have your commercial kitchen here so I can be your official taste tester & recipe approver... No? That doesn't seem cost-effective? Ugh.

Bianca said...

Congrats! That'd be my dream job...I wish you all the luck in the world. And if I ever send up in SF again (it's been years....far too long), I will eat some! Probably lots!

Congratulations and good luck with everything. I would be one of your best custumers if I was a little bit closer.

I just have to say your header made me giggle in a good way. Very clever!
Your food looks absolutely delicious!
You really put out there that being vegan doesn't mean eating the same boring things all the time, you've really spiced things up and shown some variety here. You might even get me to join in on the vegan fun!

Congratulations, Melisser!! I had a strong feeling like a bakery was in your future earlier this year. I hope you add your pumpkin donuts to the menu this fall.

I wish you nothing but the best!

congrats! I'm not at all surprised. When I first looked at your post around a year ago, I was surprised that you didn't own a bakery. Your baking is amazing. I'm going to be making your candy corn recipe this halloween. I'm thinking pink.

I can testify from first-hand experience that Sugar Beat Sweets' cupcakes are AWESOME! Congrats, Melisser!

Melisser,

Early last month, before your big announcement, I came to San Francisco to look at sublets in hopes of relocating. I spent my spare time exploring the City and some of the vegan eats it has to offer. My travels led me to Rainbow Grocery, where to my delight, I discovered vegan cupcakes. Unfortunately, these vegan cupcakes were not good. Not at all. And I left San Francisco fearing that, should I move out here, I would have to live without tasty vegan cupcakes. Which was more important: moving to a place where I'd wanted to live for a long time or staying in DC, a place where I didn't fit but where delicious vegan baked goods were always guaranteed at Sticky Fingers Bakery? Satisfying my sweet tooth is of utmost importance.

I landed in San Francisco last week, and adjusting to a new city where I know no one (really, no one) has been so hard. So unbelievably hard. But you know what makes me feel better? Your cupcakes. It's amazing what a tasty vegan cupcake can do to a lonely, homesick vegan girl.

When I went to Rainbow last week, I noticed that there were new vegan cupcakes for sale. What was even better is that one of them was snickerdoodle-flavored, and I *love* snickerdoodle cookies. So I bought it, and it was everything I could ask for in a vegan cupcake. And when I went to Rainbow again, I bought the peanut butter and jelly one, and it was just as good as the snickerdoodle one.

So I want to thank you for helping me through this difficult time just by baking those cupcakes. Because for the 3 minutes it takes me to eat one, I forget just how hard this is and how much I miss home.

P.S.-And like a couple other commenters, I'd love to work at your storefront if you open one!

I just discovered your blog. I can't wait to be back in San Francisco to try all the baked goods on your menu!
